TPN‘s Trifling Religious Leader of the Week

popebenedictxvi_3Pope Benedict XVI

Sigh. I really thought we were past this issue, but when the Pope said condom usage worsens the spread of AIDS, he sounded like he’d time-traveled straight from 1984 with no knowledge of medical revelations of the intervening years. How can else can you explain such ignorance? Does he know, I wonder, about cell phones, the Internet and cloned sheep? Holy Father, I understand your devotion to your religious practices, but that type of talk isn’t just trifling—it’s dangerous.

  1. Now that condoms are being handed out in grade school, AIDS should be eradicated in our lifetime.

  2. Sex outside a single commited relationship spreads AIDS. Condom use and birth control promotes free sex. So, yes, condom use promotes the spread of AIDS by altering attitudes about sex. “Hey, I only have three condoms left and no money, gee, I’ll save those for that AIDS carrying looking scank” Dream on

  3. Sorry Xavier – can’t agree with you. Condoms have a 15% fail rate – that means they are not recommended for birth control. Viruses are smaller than sperm. To lead people believe they are safe when, in reality, they are playing Russian Roulette is trifling. I will agree though that they have delayed the inevitable and the disease is spreading much slower – so… kudos to those of you who actually use them correctly and every time. (I know, I know… there is no money in abstinence)

  4. I usually love what you have to say, and get a good laugh, but this time I have to speak up! Renee and Barack above each mentioned some of the things that I was thinking. I couldn’t disagree with you more! (Sorry!)

[Is this Trifling column supposed to be funny? It seems to me that every time I’ve read it, it’s been pretty serious, and close to crossing the line. And now this.

    And I love a good satire . . . ]

  5. Are you all mad?! (The crazy version, I mean) Yes, Xavier, you are so wrong. We should all stop using condoms. Then, no one will have sex! Then AIDS will disappear! Yayyy!

Come on, now. Condom use does not spread AIDS. Ignorance does. The Pope speaks from a religious aspect in that Catholics believe that birth control of any kind is wrong. So when people say that condoms prevents AIDS he puts forth damaging nonsense to shoot down that argument. Get a grip, then get a clue.
