TPN‘s Trifling Person of the Week

John Roberts

John, I was almost going to let it go. But then I saw a replay of you going Yoda on the Presidential Oath, and realized this singular moment, the one hundreds of millions of people around the world had tuned in to see, was going to be ruined forever. While bumbling over words was the norm for the outgoing Commander-in-Chief, it’s time to raise your game, Mr. Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The oath is only 35 words. I hope you can get it right in 2012.

  1. Word up! Or is it Up word?

  2. Give him a break, it was the first time he was that close to a Black man without a guard and a court clerk to protect him.

  3. Spot on… spot on. Out of this whole week full of activities, if all you had to do was rehearse not even memorize 35-words… you’d think he’d get it right. But noooooo.

Talk about messing up a great moment.

But, you saw how Obama paused and gave him that “stop f-ing up my moment” look. Classic.

  4. So I guess “grace” and “transcendence” didn’t come up at the staff meeting then… but then Justice Roberts is white so…

The Peoples News responds: No, Renee…it’s that he’s trifling.

  5. Trifling is putting it mildly. But those folks had a lotof stuff going on. Bush shaking President Obama’s hand with a glove on? How about this one Cheney hurt his back picking up a box. That is so laughable. he hasn’t pickup a box since the last time he ate some Cracker Jacks. How about he didn’t want to stand up for a Black man getting sworn in as President. They are all so trifling.

The Peoples News responds: I can’t come along with you about Cheney, Norma. He was injured enough to be in a wheelchair, so if he was sitting, it had nothing to do with Obama’s race.

  6. I took basically that exact same oath when sworn in as an officer in the US Army, I really didn’t follow what the guy giving it said, for I too had easily memorized those few words for the momentus occasion in my life……………Thanks for the explanation for Barack, I thought it was because it was the 1st time our CinC had to talk without a teleprompter.

  7. How come I … a guy whose involvement in politics is strictly as a civilian … knows the oath goes “will faithfully execute” and the stupid-ass Chief Justice of the Supreme Court doesn’t!

  8. So we get a guy who murdered his kid to avoid child support, a couple who named their son Adolph Hitler, and then… a guy who mixed up a few words in a public statement? Could you let us in on your definition of “trifling”? Because it seems pretty broad.

The Peoples News responds: Thanks for reading, KenK. Our definition is broad, and it has to be or else the segment would get extremely repetitive pretty quick.

  9. Q. How many Harvard Law Review editors does it take to screw up the Oath of Office (which is clearly delineated in Article II, Section I, Clause 8)?

    A. One. Namely Chief Justice John Roberts, former managing editor of the Harvard Law Review.

The former Editor in Chief….now Commander in Chief, knew what was correct but decided to leave you some dignity. Shame…I don’t think I could have managed it. Man, John Paul Stevens is over 90 and he got his stuff right!

  10. Im really hoping he doesn’t HAVE to get it right in 2012….becuse depending on his performance I’d like to see our current President for a second term and he won’t NEED to retake the oath, will he?
Or do they retake it at the beginning of each term?

  11. Our Commander in Chief was oh so cool, even as the chief justice screwed the oath up. He can handle himself with grace and dignity in any situation.

  12. Craig,
Did you catch the broadcast of the “do over” swearing in?

  13. Sometimes people just buckle when they know they have an audience, in this case billions.
